State benefits, by state and by rating
Every state adds its own benefits on top of VA's. The big ones are property tax, plates and registration, hunting, fishing, and parks, tuition, and state income tax. Each page lists the minimum rating and links the official state source.
Two traps that cross state lines
- "100%" is not one thing. States write their laws as "100% permanent and total," "totally and permanently disabled," "100% schedular," or "unemployable." Read your state's exact words. Our P&T explainer.
- Residency and deadlines. Most property tax exemptions require you to live in the home on a set date and file by a set date, usually with the county, not the state. Missing the date costs a full year.
